Dyson Airwrap Review: A Pricey Curling Iron, Blow Dryer, and Hot-Air Brush in One

curling hair dryer

Those blessed (or cursed) with a head of thick, luscious hair know the struggle of finding a blow dryer that will actually dry it. This hair dryer from BaByliss not only dries thick hair in minutes, it also feels surprisingly lightweight. This hair dryer may not have all the bells and whistles of the fancier (and pricier) options on this list, but it gets the job done beautifully. We found this dryer to be one of the most powerful we’ve ever tested and were shocked that it dried our thick, wavy hair in less than 10 minutes. Although first impressions aren’t everything, the sleek design of this T3 hair dryer nearly won us over, although we were curious whether such a small hair dryer would be powerful enough for a proper blowout.

What makes a blow-dryer the best tool for styling hair?

The diffuser's fingers work within the twists and turns of your hair, enhancing its natural shape—though you can take it off and use it as a regular hairdryer to achieve a great blowout. Our editors are constantly trying out new products and speaking to experts to determine the best of all things beauty, and hair dryers are among the most tested. Ahead, read up on how we tested, reviewed, and determined the best hair dryers for seamless drying and styling pleasure. For those who want to “take textured hair straight, you’ll need a concentrator attachment to smooth out strands and create shine,” says Giovanni Vaccaro, hairstylist and co-founder of the on-demand beauty service, GlamSquad. “I prefer a thin attachment that helps concentrate air on a smaller section.” The Pattern Blow Dryer comes with brush, wide tooth comb, diffuser, and concentrator nozzle and is great for curly hair. One editor with wavy, thick and dry hair, who was accustomed to using the highest heat settings, found that this dryer didn’t cut down on her drying time as much as she would have liked.

Best Hair Dryer for Curly and Wavy Hair

Testing hundreds of haircare products each year, the GH Institute Beauty Lab has expertise on all the best hot tools, from hair straightening brushes to hair straighteners to curling irons. Our scientists evaluated 41 hair dryers across price points when testing the best hair dryers. That included measuring drying speed on standardized human hair samples, airflow force, weight, air and surface temperature and cord length. There are lots of excellent budget-friendly blow dryers that do wonders for curly hair. We're big fans of Revlon's Volume Booster on account of its 1875 watts of power, three heat settings, two speed settings, and curl-enhancing diffuser attachment.

Upgrade pick: Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

In simple terms, ion technology produces negative ions which work to seal the hair's cuticle and break down positively charged ions found in water molecules. This process ultimately helps your hair to dry faster, allowing you to use lower temperatures and spend less time applying direct heat to your curls. This is extremely beneficial for curly hair, because curls are often fragile and prone to frizz and heat damage. Using an ionic hair dryer will help you to maintain the health of your curls while transforming your hair from wispy and frizzy to sleek and smooth. The accompanying attachments make it one of the best blow dryers for curly hair for creating different looks.

When you're on the go, you can count on the T3 Featherweight to take care of your curls. This hair dryer isn't just small—it also folds up into a conveniently compact configuration. And if you think portability means you have to sacrifice power, we're happy to tell you this dual-voltage gadget is just as efficient as its full-sized counterparts. For accentuated curls anytime, anywhere, consider getting the diffuser attachment too.

While our wavy hair did receive the results we set out to achieve (a straight blowout without the need for a follow-up tool), our coily hair still needed a second tool to straighten the ends. The wide-tooth comb wasn't particularly useful for drying our kinky hair, not completely drying it and leaving the ends puffy. We love a good multitasking product, and the Shark HyperAir Hair Dryer is certainly no exception to the rule; it’s an ideal choice for those seeking the best dryer-brush combo.

She also reviews applications, substantiates claims and evaluates products for the GH Seal and the Beauty Awards and Sustainability Awards programs. In chemistry from Ithaca College and more than 16 years of experience working in the pharmaceutical and personal care industries. In Lab tests, it scored in the middle of the pack in everything from ease of use to performance to user satisfaction. While short barrel and compact design makes it foolproof to use on shorter tresses (and the perfect size for travel, too), the tool may be too short to use effectively on longer hair. If the cord was retractable, we’d say this option is pretty much perfect, especially for someone looking to really increase volume in fine hair. A true investment piece, the Dyson SuperSonic Hair Dryer arrived at our doorstep loaded with five different attachments and a high-powered, three-heat setting panel.

At the time of publishing, we were not able to find any hair dryers for curly hair from a Black-owned and/or Black-founded business. If you know of one we should consider, please email us at  and we will evaluate the product ASAP. The Hot Tools Professional Black Gold Turbo Ionic Salon Dryer (DC Motor) is extremely light at only 14 ounces. But it also has the most buttons and slides and switches of any hair dryer we’ve ever tested, including a cool-shot button, a power-boost slide, an ion select wheel, and switches for speed and temp—whew! The EZ Dryer Ion is the most effective and efficient paddle-style hair dryer brush we tested.

When you use your fingers to scrunch, separate, or even plop your curly hair, you're left with great definition that enhances your curl pattern. Now combine that technique with ionic drying technology that is dispersed from all sides of the diffuser's "fingers," and you get reduced drying time, less frizz, and a ton of lift sans the heat damage. Its tourmaline ceramic technology helps seal in moisture and prevent frizzy hair, experts told us. Other attachments include the brand’s Double-Layered Detangler Pik and Single-Layered Detangler Pik that help smooth and straighten hair, according to Kiss. It also comes with a removable filter, which Lothrop says is important to clean regularly.

A lot of curly girls steer clear of heat, but the reality is that hair dryers for curly hair are like any heated styling tool (including the best straighteners for curly hair) and can make wash day and styling a lot easier when used correctly. To select this list of the best hair dryers for curly hair, our editors conducted extensive testing on over 25 top-rated tools, evaluating the devices on types 2a to 4c hair. With this extensive first-hand testing and expert suggestions, we’ve narrowed down the best hair dryers for curly hair.

If you want a diffuser or smoothing comb, you’ll need to purchase it separately. If you're a novice when it comes to blowouts, the Pro Artist Black Gold 2000 Watt Ionic Hair Dryer might sound intimidating, but it's actually as user-friendly as it gets. Balancing a hair dryer in one hand — while using your fingers to maneuver the different modes — and using a styling brush in another is no easy feat, but with this Hot Tools dryer, the whole process is simple.

"The bowl-shaped cradles curls without disrupting them while they dry." We appreciate that the dryer backed by a two-year warranty (you just have to remember to register your product to activate it). Marabello says a lighter, smaller dryer like this one is best for clients to use on their own because they can more easily maneuver the brush. One caveat, though, is that it comes with only one attachment — a contouring nozzle — but the brand has a compatible diffuser, which is available for purchase separately.

According to Stewart, if you have heat damage, try drying hair on a low setting with warm or cool air instead of with hot air on a high setting. "In addition, you can use a heat protectant or serum prior to blow drying to protect your strands," she says. Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer is one of our favorites because it provides heat and UV protection, moisturizes, detangles, and cuts down frizz. Put to use on our very thick, long, wavy hair (which historically takes forever to dry), the Harry Josh Ultra Light Pro Dryer proved its prowess as the best professional-grade tool in its class. This mint-green, French-made dryer weighs in at under a pound, yet produces a powerful airstream that goes virtually unheard, thanks to its patented silencer that drops the noise volume considerably. With a 22-minute blow dry completed on fine, color-treated hair, the dryer delivered a sleek, salon-quality blowout with no heat damage reported.

The dryer also has auto-dual voltage, meaning it can be used anywhere in the world — so no matter where your travels take you, a sleek blowout will always be available. It's worth noting that the highest heat setting isn't super hot, but it didn't bother us, as it kept us from burning our hair. In addition to being incredibly lightweight, the blow dryer has some pretty unique settings. Despite having two settings (hot and cool), we wanted more heat settings, especially a medium option, for a more customizable drying experience. With a strong, even airflow, it took about 20 minutes to thoroughly dry our hair, resulting in a flippy, bouncy look.

If you’re a lover of wigs and weaves, do you want to be able to style those too? You might be forgiven for thinking that all hair dryers are created equally, but things such as ease of use, power, attachments and accessories can set models apart. And when it comes to enhancing your curls and making your hair routine effortless, these things can make all the difference. As a shopping starting point, keep in mind that your blow-dryer is more about the tool itself and not just the attachment. You can easily replace a diffuser; you'd have to start over with the base if it conks out — and that's often a pricier purchase and requires a bit of research.

Shark SpeedStyle for Curly and Coily Hair

The sound the Supersonic emits is a high-pitched whine, with none of the low rattle that other dryers put out. Whether this sound is more pleasant, as the company claims, is a matter of personal opinion, though. As with any dryer, the sound of whooshing air is physically impossible to eliminate. For the initial iteration of this guide, we timed the models drying a swatch of hair from a wig wetted with 5 grams of water, with the dryers on their highest setting. It scored highest for releasing hair from the clamp without snagging or pulling hair, including a perfect score for its clamp.

Best for thick, dense, or curly/coily/kinky hair

Its original diffuser attachment is designed to distribute 360º airflow around curls when working through the length of hair in a scrunching motion. The aim is to speed up the drying time from the root and give bouncy curls. Despite its budget-friendly price, this model doesn't compromise on features, coming with both concentrator and diffuser attachments, plus hair clips.

After putting in over 20 hours of research and spending over 70 hours testing 42 hair dryers, we’ve found that some are far more pleasant to hold and use than others. Because it provides an excellent experience for the price, we think the Rusk W8less Professional 2000 Watt Dryer is the best choice. Sick of running out of space on your wand to curl your long hair, or having to wrap hair multiple times over itself?

DevaCurl products are made by people with curly hair for people with curly hair, so you can bet the brand's DevaDryer knows what it's doing. This nifty blow dryer comes with a finger-like diffuser attachment that does an excellent job of scrunching, lifting, and separating hair (curly-haired folks know that a delicate touch is the way to get those perfect ringlets). "The best thing about the diffuser is that it's heat-resistant, meaning you won't burn your hand or your hair," Spino tells Byrdie. The downside, though, is that a single temperature may not suit all different hair types, textures and thicknesses. The high speed with low heat dried our hair fast — in four and a half minutes to be exact, without any attachments. After drying, we used the concentrator, which smoothed out our hair nicely and reduced the look of frizz.

With a background in hair dye research and synthesis, Wizemann loves everything hair-related. Over her years in the GH Beauty Lab, she has led Lab and consumer studies on at-home hair dyes, shampoos and conditioners, hair serums, hair volumizers, hair dryers and more. We also have a panel of testers try them out at home and report back on how well the curling irons create curls, how long the curls last and how easy and comfortable the tools are to use. Though we haven't tested this one in-Lab, the brand claims it heats up in 30 seconds, and we love that it has a swivel cord and adjustable temperature settings.

Conair covers the InfinitiPro with an impressive four-year warranty (PDF). While we haven't formally tested this exact model in the Lab yet, Drybar's curling wand has performed well in our Lab tests, so it's no surprise this three-in-one pick is a fan favorite. Despite our positive experience, we wish there were more bells and whistles. Overall, we love the results it delivers, but would love it even more if it came with more attachments.

No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal. Sarah Han after using the Dyson hair dryer with smooth, frizz-free hair.

A panel of testers evaluated over 25 hair dryers to curate this list of the best blow dryers for curly hair. We tested these dryers on our own hair, as well as human hair wigs to assess the dryers on types 2a to 4c hair. Beyond this range of curl patterns, we also tested the dryers on a range of hair lengths and thicknesses. We tested the tools over two months to evaluate their longevity, styling versatility, and how they hold up to everyday wear and tear. During testing, we assessed the attachments, special features, heat and airflow settings, and the results that these best hair dryers for curly hair deliver. Finding a hair dryer that can produce sleek results without compromising healthy curls is key.

Despite loving the blow dryer's sturdy, compact body and easy-to-use attachments, we were less impressed with the cool setting — it more so felt like we were out on a windy day. Adorned with rose gold accents and arriving in a hyper compact size, the SRI DryQ Hair Dryer is small enough to store yet pretty enough to leave out on the hotel bathroom’s counter. We were thoroughly impressed with how fast the SRI DryQ acted, cutting down the dry time on our thick, curly hair post-shower markedly, thanks to its settings and strong airflow.

We have thin hair, and not a lot of it, so we need our hair dryer to be strong enough to whip up a serious amount of volume, and this little guy did just that. What I like the most about this dryer is that it’s functional and also kind to your pocket (because, hello cost of living crisis). It has both a nozzle and a nice size diffuser, and a very handy hanging loop, which I wasn’t expecting considering the price point. Much like the Dyson Corrale hair straightener that I reviewed recently, the Airwrap is a solid hair tool that almost anyone who frequently styles their hair will love.

We were thoroughly impressed by the blowout produced by the INFINITIPRO SmoothWrap Hair Dryer, transforming our fine, wavy hair into a dreamy blowout in a matter of just 18 minutes flat. Even better, it wasn’t heavy or bulky, and didn’t aggravate our editor’s carpal tunnel. The spiral-y way it grows out of your hair looks beautiful, but ultimately, it's more fragile than straight hair and can get dry really easily.

Millard House In Pasadena by Frank Lloyd Wright

millard house

The 16-inch concrete squares are scored in a cruciform pattern suggestive of primitive American Indian design. They were stacked in a double wall, 12 inches thick, with space in the middle for insulation. Ironically, the blocks themselves, made locally from wooden molds that expanded and contracted, did not turn out to be uniform.

Landmark houses: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Millard House (La Miniatura)

The 2,400-square-foot (220 m2) house consists of a vertical three-story block. The first floor has the kitchen, servant’s room and a dining room opening onto a terrace with a reflecting pool. The second floor has the main entrance, guest room, and a two-story living room with a fireplace and balcony.

The house revolves around a central chimney, and views of the gardens can be seen from every room. One side of the double-height living room is enclosed by a wall of glass doors, surmounted by a screen of perforated concrete blocks that filter the light. On the opposite wall, the patterned blocks conceal the access to the top floor. A mezzanine on the level above overlooks the living room and also hosts the master bedroom and a terrace above the semi-detached garage. The first floor contains the kitchen, dining room, and maid’s quarters. The dining room opens towards the luscious garden with a reflecting pool.

Millard House In Pasadena by Frank Lloyd Wright

These homes resembled neither his previous work in the Midwest nor the Spanish Colonial–style homes found in L.A. He designed five of them, namely the Millard House, the Hollyhock House, the Ennis House, the Storer House, and the Freeman House, all of which are featured in the documentary. And moved back to his native Wisconsin, and never again called upon the pre-Colombian ornamental elements for inspiration. “How could over time if a system of appropriate and feasible construction came first. He has lived mainly in the architectural gutter as an imitation of the “face” of the stone.

More From the Los Angeles Times

Some would say the mezzanine, which provides passage to the master bedroom while overlooking the two-story-tall living room, offered a glimpse of the plan for the Guggenheim Museum 36 years later. The unorthodox layout is as intriguing as it is disorienting, causing some first-time visitors to lose track of where they are and how rooms relate to one another. True to his word and his eye, in building the Millard house Wright created a landmark residence that belied his preference for the horizontal. It made a singular vertical impression, evoking a Maya monument rising from the jungle when viewed from the downhill side. If you're an architecture lover, check out famous Los Angeles houses that are open to the public, including Richard Neutra's VDL house, the Eames house (home of designers Charles and Ray Eames), and Pierre Koenig's Stahl House.

Demystifying Frank Lloyd Wright’s most eccentric LA homes

The neighborhood near this house is full of Arts and Crafts-style homes which are a pleasure to see, and it's just a few blocks from the Greene and Greene masterpiece Gamble House. This home in Pasadena is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most groundbreaking designs. Created in 1923 for rare book dealers George and Alice Millard, it was Wright's first attempt at modular building. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Alice and George Millard House boasts irreplaceable art glass windows, original fixtures and hardware, fireplaces, and millwork all in a legendary design with great flow. The first floor offers a gourmet kitchen with sub-Zero, tons of cabinets, and all the bells and whistles, open to a lovely dining room perfect for entertaining. Enormous great room is perfect for casual living with Wright’s signature fireplace and access to the covered porch, in addition to a den/office with access to the rear deck and yard.

Millard added a separate studio in 1926, designed by Wright's son, Lloyd Wright. Like many of Wright's homes, Millard House suffered from leaks during rains. After the house flooded in a storm, Millard wrote a letter to Wright complaining about the inadequate storm drain that resulted in the basement filling entirely with muddy water and the water rising to six inches (152 mm) in the dining room.

What to know about California’s new state park, a scenic green space where two rivers meet

Wright took on the Millard House following his completion of the Hollyhock House in Hollywood and the Imperial Hotel in Japan. Although the floors and walls are made of concrete, they do not feel cold or harsh because they are polished to a quality finish and visually warmed by good natural light and details such as the wooden-clad ceilings. He sought to develop an inexpensive and simple method of construction that would enable ordinary people to build their own homes with stacked blocks. Each block had a groove in each edge, and when the blocks were laid, a strand of reinforcing steel was fitted in the grooves to lock the blocks together. Poured concrete, however, does not depend on regular, grid-like patterns.

The Millards sold illuminated manuscripts, prints, and finely bound books, and their cosmopolitan appreciation of art and culture surely informed their decision to engage Wright as an architect. The dark, board and batten siding of the house creates a pronounced texture and harmonizes with the wooded landscape that surrounds it. The strongly horizontal planes of the building are tiered and the second story bedroom projects over the ground floor dining room. Dramatic cantilevered roofs extend even further over the structure below. Because the lot is heavily shaded by trees, Wright employed windows with simple, clear, elongated diamond patterns that permit natural light to enter the interior spaces. Overall stability is achieved by joining these blocks with reinforcing rods vertically and horizontally between each piece.

Internationally recognized as one of the most architecturally important properties in the world, the 4,230 square foot residence sits on nearly an acre of gardens. Millard added a separate studio in 1926, designed by Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright. Like many of Wright’s homes, Millard House suffered from leaks during rains. After the house flooded in a storm, Millard wrote a letter to Wright complaining about the inadequate storm drain that resulted in the basement filling entirely with muddy water and the water rising to six inches (152 mm) in the dining room.

Back in 2009, La Miniatura was placed on the market for $7.7 million but couldn’t find a buyer. The work that’s gone into the home has surely lent to the hefty price tag, and as they say “location, location, location” — La Miniatura is sited in the heart of Pasadena within a lush, green and quiet residential block overlooking the Arroyo Secco Park. The home is also in good architectural company, located just a few blocks from Greene and Greene’s famed Gamble House, as well as a few of the brothers’ other homes. If you’re in the market for some serious real estate, we think this is a good bet. For Alice Millard her house functioned as a living space and office, but also something of a museum and a space for teaching.

La Miniatura, also known as the Millard House, is a textile block house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1923 in Pasadena, California. It is one of Wright’s most famous and innovative works, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Millard House, also known as La Miniatura, is a textile block house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1923 in Pasadena, California. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Upstairs the primary bedroom features a fireplace, lovely dressing room, luxury bath, and private balcony.

Similarly, the two other bedrooms also have outstanding baths and walk-in closets with built-ins. The lower level is finished with an additional bedroom, full bath, playroom and exercise area. Newly installed radiant heat throughout and highly efficient space-pak air conditioning. All situated on approximately 2/3 of an acre a 1/2 block from Lake Michigan in one of East Highland Park’s premier locations. The Millard House, located in Pasadena, California, was the first of Frank Lloyd Wright’s four “textile block” houses — all built in Los Angeles County in 1923 and 1924.

Hawthorne's documentary provides a necessary focus on Wright's Californian designs, which have long been overlooked. The project is supported by contributions from a collaboration of photographers with varying levels of skills and experience, but a common interest in the place we all call home - Southern California. Some of the blocks are solid while others are perforated to allow filtered light through the cross, breaking up the dullness and visual mass of the concrete. The home clings to the lot's steep ravine, nestled within a thicket of trees. Wright challenged himself to only create something beautiful from what he called "the cheapest and ugliest thing in the building world", and to develop a new low-cost flexible building system with the same material.

Make sure your bathroom style matches the rest of the house

For example, if the bath is in front of a window, you might choose to light the windows with two miniature uplights with one narrow beam downlight over the tub,' says Sally Storey. To build on top of this bathroom's moody atmosphere, studio CAK installed LED sconces to bring in evocative light. To bring even light to this recessed vanity space, designer Summer Thornton outfitted it in three shaded wallchieres.

How to Pick Light Bulbs

Have your mood lighting recessed within cabinetry, niches, or with your bathroom shelf ideas so you can’t see the source. These lights must be designed for bathroom use and IP-rated according to proximity to water. Fairly bright lights pointing in all directions make this a bathing space that is perfect for relaxing soaks with no danger of dazzling beams. Recessed walls and ceilings are great for hiding spotlights and LEDs. Statement lighting is having a moment, and whether you opt for oversized or crystal, all-out glamour is the way to go, great for master bathroom ideas.

Install adequate task lighting

Multi-skilled, Jennifer has worked in PR and marketing, and the occasional dabble in the social media, commercial and e-commerce space. Consider installing a row of two or three at the back of the shower or bath, instead of over the center, so the shafts of light create an effect almost like running water down the wall. The light will also reach the extremities of the room, creating the feel of space. It takes a little bravery, but you can afford to use larger lights than you might at first think sensible. Big bathroom chandeliers, drum pendants, and giant floor lamps are all very much in vogue for those who like their lighting to make a statement.

BathCAD is part of the three mains software of ArtiCAD that functions mainly for bathrooms, although if you do remodeling for other functional rooms, consider the ArtiCAD-Pro version. Welcome: I’m Tatyana, your interior designer friend

For those of you in the midst of a bathroom renovation (or just a slight refresh), we’ve compiled some illuminating inspiration from the AD archives and revealed the lighting sources behind each. With so many options for lamp shades, you might need a nudge in the right direction to maintain the bright lighting that illuminates your bathroom without ruining the ambiance in the space. Linette Dai, founder and principal of LA’s Linette Dai Design, notes that shades will make a big difference on the mood that emanates from the light source. In a bathroom that's already been renovated, but just needs a little lighting help, look to your existing fixtures. Pull in themes from your vanity or shower tile to ensure your lighting feels connected and purposeful.

Planning bathroom lighting properly can make all the difference to the success of your remodel, helping you create the right ambience, whatever the time of day. Depending on the size of the bathroom, you will need 1-3 ceiling lights spaced out proportionately in the middle of the ceiling. All bathrooms need overhead lighting for ambient (general light) and vanity light for task light. You can also add accent lighting (above the bathtub) if the space allows.

We do hope you like our selection of bathroom design apps and software. When planning bathroom lighting, think about how it can be used to make a decorative statement, helping transform a small or somewhat clinical room into a more inviting space. Just as you would in a living room, add in softer pools of light that make the space more decorative, than if just lit by ceiling lights. Or, you can choose more decorative ceiling lighting for a bathroom – from bathroom chandelier ideas to simpler fittings. The pendant shade has a diffusing effect, casting a soft even light across the room.

These tasks require focused light provided by luminaires specifically made as task lighting. In bathrooms, task lights usually have a color temperature of 3,000 to 3,200 kelvin. They set the mood of your space and maintain a light level throughout your room. So, for instance, warm light with a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin, just like your traditional incandescent bulbs, provides a cozy feeling due to the warm temperature. From pendant lights to flush mount to recessed, it can be a puzzle to figure out what light style is best for your space.

If you have a multilight fixture over the mirror, the light should spread evenly over a 24-inch-wide area to illuminate your face without casting shadows under your eyes or chin. While this tool provides a lot of features in an easy-to-use form factor, it lacks the expansive list of tools required for professional-level design. There are plenty of options aside from the aforementioned Planner 5D. AutoDesk Homestyler is another online application that will allow you to design bathrooms right in your browser. Others include Room Sketcher, Sweet Home 3D, HomeByMe, and IKEA Home Planner. You don’t need to install it on your computer; you just need a browser and an internet connection.

The sleek design of the sconces contributes to the contemporary style of the space. The software itself is fairly easy to use, giving users the ability to create 3D models of bathrooms, lay tile and even place 3D objects. It also supports the export of photorealistic renders, depending on which tier of Tile 3D you own. The AI-assisted planning process helps reduce design inefficiencies and optimize for speed.

Here, you will definitely want to use either a damp-rated or moisture-rated fixture when installing your recessed lighting. Your choice will depend on whether water will directly hit the light or if it will only be exposed to humidity. Your choice will also ultimately depend on the shape and size of your mirror. A round mirror in a small powder room may only have space for a sconce above while a double vanity may have room for multiple eye-level sconces. The other option is a fixture directly above the mirror, but if you decide to go this way, opt for a fixture with an opaque cover to avoid harsh overhead lighting that creates unflattering shadows.

It has a material library with over 1500 pieces of furniture to pick from. When it comes to a bathroom renovation, the design you pick may have a significant influence on your budget and also the usefulness and aesthetic appeal of your new space. Fortunately for you, the digital world, and the wide range of design software available make this process considerably simpler. As much as we love bright hues and fanciful decor, there is a case to be made for neutral color palettes, crisp minimalism, and other sleek modern bathroom ideas.

Consider deeper tones and colors offset by industrial-style light fixtures if your bathroom has the space. The characteristic black pipe-style finishing will add a bold touch to give the bathroom an adventurous contemporary feel. You usually include ceiling, natural, task, and accent lighting in a bathroom’s lighting. The ceiling light is usually called ambient lighting, which sets the mood as discussed previously, but aside from this, you’ll need to consider the task lighting. No matter the size of your bathroom, multiple light sources will always enhance the design.

House Love by Patric Richardson OverDrive: ebooks, audiobooks, and more for libraries and schools

However, on their return to London Pete Evans announced to the band that he wanted to retire from the music business. Slowly we added some organization thanks to renting a bag-like dumpster to get rid of lots of junk, painting and framing out the pegboards, hanging some sawdust-proof art, and organizing the insane collection of paint that we amassed. Judd spoke lovingly of her mother’s sense of humor and discovery of music as a child, but also noted that Naomi, 76, was a survivor of childhood and adult sexual violence who became a nurse and then a Grammy-winning country icon. While Mr. Fetterman may have been in the minority among his political peers, with most of whom following the president’s example and opting for a traditional tux, creative black tie proved a talking point.

Making An Arts & Crafts Room For Our Kids

The House of Love are an English alternative rock band, formed in London in 1986 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Guy Chadwick and co-founder and lead guitarist Terry Bickers. They rose to prominence in 1987 with their first single "Shine On", released on the independent label Creation. The following year, the band released their critically acclaimed eponymous debut album and built their reputation over the next few years through subsequent releases, constant touring and the support of English press. They signed with Fontana Records in 1989 and met commercial success in 1990 with their second self-titled album, which peaked at number 8 in the UK albums chart. Their third album, Babe Rainbow, was favourably met by the critics in 1992 and also reached the top 40 in the UK.

Here’s the room after we painted the fireplace, removed a desk and cabinet, and painted the paneling. We also added the eight foot opening to the dining room (more on that project here and here). Here’s what the porch looked like after transplanting all of the house-blocking bushes and painting the front door.

Here’s that same space now that we built a deck, got it furnished, and switched out that old broken slider for a brand new french door. We later stained & sealed the deck to finish things off. It’s only fitting, really, given the subtext of journalists being jailed around the world.

Using Solid Stain In Our Outdoor Shower

Here’s how it all looked after a few years of upgrading it. As for what we did, we arranged those shelves and painted the back wall of the built-ins. We also added a giant 70″ table, some $62 patio chairs (from Target on clearance), and some homemade curtains with a fun bold print. But the biggest change by far is the eight foot opening that we added to connect the dining room and kitchen (more on that project here and here). I also love this Burt’s Bees deep pore scrub that gently exfoliates (it has those little beads in it) and leaves my skin feeling soft.

Our original backyard was perfect for our wedding, but all that weeding and trimming was incredibly time consuming on a regular basis. Cara's home went up in flames, sparking a massive response from the fire department, with the dramatic scene even caught on video. After that, a special general election must be held 64 to 70 days after the special primary election. Now it will be up to Murphy to call a special primary election, which must be held 70 to 76 days after the governor's announcement. "Don affectionately called me ‘Uncle Frank’ whenever I saw him, because we cherished the strong relationship we forged following the death of his father," Pallone said.

Additional Information

If downsizing (or even moving in general) has taught us anything, it’s that there are always trade-offs. We live a few blocks from the Gulf Of Mexico (we can walk there in three minutes!) but we all share one bathroom. If we ever feel a strong desire to change that, we could add another one (we have the perfect spot for it in our bedroom), but it has been surprisingly fine to have just one – likely in part to having an awesome outdoor shower that we all love.

It's like this huge trolley full of booze being placed in front of you. With a whiff of success, people change towards you. We were taking too many drugs, I was drinking ridiculously and that's the worst combination when things are going wrong. There's a lot going on in "House Love," the new book from St. Paul, Minnesota's Patric Richardson and his "Laundry Love" collaborator Karin B. Miller.

“With his signature bowtie, big heart, and tenacious spirit, Donald embodied the very best of public service. In December 2012, The House of Love Official Facebook page confirmed that the band had recently completed a new studio album. The album was recorded with original members Chadwick, Bickers, Evans accompanied by bassist Matt Jury.

…that we shipped to our much-smaller house in Northwest Florida. A lot happened over that decade and a half of living in Richmond and having two kids and a dog, but the cliff notes version is that each home that we bought for our family got bigger and bigger. This is our last house in the Richmond suburbs that we fixed up, which was a whopping 3,150 square feet on almost an acre of land. A UK tour was organised in September with eleven dates across the country, followed by the rescheduled 30th Anniversary Tour in North America in October. Here are all of our project and room makeover favorites on one easy to browse page full of decorating ideas, easy upgrades, painting and furniture building ideas, etc.

With this book, you’ll learn new and novel ways to transform your home, and Patric’s entertaining stories, good humor, and genuine warmth will guide you every step of the way. We hung some breezy white curtains in each corner and ripped up that old rug to reveal the concrete flooring underneath- which we painted a rich chocolate color to work with the mocha flooring throughout the rest of the house. Then for fun we added a playful stencil and painted the ceiling blue like the sky.

We worked at an advertising agency in midtown, and we each lived in various tiny rental apartments in various boroughs (we bounced around a lot). We had so few items that when we moved to Virginia together at age 25 with all of our worldly possessions, they fit in one minivan. We are very happy to announce the long awaited new album from The House Of Love. Available on CD and double 10" vinyl from September 16th on Cherry Red Records, and digitally on all streaming platforms.

There was a weird alley between the original part of the house and the addition that was added in the seventies, and this is a shot we took during our first walk-through. There’s a separate entry basement under the living room which started out pretty messy. Here’s the hallway after we hung a ton of frames (see how we did that here and here) on both sides of the wall for a playful wallpapered-with-frames effect. The eight foot opening to the new dining room wasn’t there yet (but from the very first day that we saw the house, we knew we wanted to add it). One of our favorite views in the house is the view from the dining room, past those built-ins, into the office.

We never want to move again, so we’re relieved to have settled into a more relaxed DIY pace (it’s nice to focus more on contentment and embrace what we have right here & now instead of constantly chasing more improvements). It also means we can spend less time on social media and more time in the real world, which is never a bad thing. Another trade-off is that we don’t have a garage (we parked outside in pine needles for a few years and then finally added parking spaces & paths) but we have a huge second-floor deck up in the trees. Discover the joy of cleaning with this cheery and thoughtful guide to tidying up and turning your house into a home.

It even takes off makeup if you rub it on like a cold cream and then wipe it off with a warm damp washcloth after applying it (the warm wet wash cloth does most of the work, so don’t overdo the coconut oil – just a dab). Even Gisele (the ridiculously gorgeous model) uses coconut oil to take off her makeup. After wiping with the washcloth to take your makeup off, just dab a bit more coconut oil on if you feel dry after that, but not too much. When I don’t wear makeup I skip the washcloth wipe-down and just rub it on like night cream.

It took us about four months, but we chugged along. Here’s the reveal post with a ton of budget and source details. Oh yeah and then we got some craigslist swivel stools and added a homemade basket pendant light in the fireplace area and repainted the walls (the second time was the charm). We thought it was a shame to lose all that valuable storage space, so we sealed the cinder block walls, painted the floor, and brought in some affordable furnishings. The entire makeover came in at just $930 (including sealants, paint, two armoires, a desk, a bookcase, and a slew of accessories).

That fireplace in the corner of the room started out looking pretty bleak. Among the actions Emhoff said the administration is taking is mobile crisis response teams, more youth suicide prevention activities, as well as increased suicide prevention efforts in schools. Washington’s annual mashup of political humor and earnest paeans to the free press is typically a good-natured collection of one-liners and affectionate jabs at friends and enemies alike. But it was the leading 2024 presidential contenders who loomed largest — one in the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom, the other who definitely, positively, probably was not watching from Mar-a-Lago. While in Washington, Payne chaired the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He played a role in securing $900 million for the state’s Gateway Project in 2017.

And here’s our bedroom after we got a new bed, switched out the light fixture, hung some free DIY art, got a new rug, made a headboard, repainted it for a moodier vibe and upholstered old side tables to make benches for the foot of the bed. And here’s the exterior after we limbed up that house-dwarfing magnolia, painted the front door, transplanted a ton of fence-like bushes that completely obscured the view, did more planting/bush removal, and planted grass in all the bare patches. You can also apply a very light coat of coconut oil in the morning on top of the apple cider vinegar (smells so good and feels more moisturized if you’re feeling dry). Lately I have been using this jade roller to help it absorb, because we know I love all the woo-woo things and it feels so good and cool on my skin in the morning – and apparently it has a ton of benefits. You can even see my eye bags disappear when I’m using it in this series of IG stories.

Not to mention spending a whole lot of time down at the beach for sunset strolls or meals and swim dates with friends (eating takeout pizza on the beach has turned into a legitimate pastime – don’t knock it ’til you try it). We started this blog 16 years ago to chat about updating our first home (we loved DIY so much that we even DIYed our own backyard wedding). When we clicked “publish” on that first blog post back in 2007, we never could’ve guessed that blogging would lead to us renovating 7 homes, sharing 3,000+ projects, writing books, and designing products for Target & Home Depot.

His place as bass guitarist was taken by Matt Jury.[4] In 2005, the band went on to tour throughout the UK, Ireland and Sweden, and released a comeback album, 'Days Run Away, on the Art & Industry label; it received some praise from critics. Terry Bickers stayed with Levitation for two albums before acrimoniously quitting the band onstage in 1993. He went on to form another short-lived space rock band, Cradle, and was involved briefly with other projects during the late 1990s, but never returned to the prominence or consistent work he had enjoyed with The House of Love and Levitation. In the early 2000s, he re-established contact with Guy Chadwick. The House of Love began work on their fourth album in January 1993. The band laid plans to record their fifth album later in the year, following a tour of France.

How To Add Crown Molding To Cabinets

So we enlisted some free labor on Craigslist and had the yard cleared in an afternoon. Then we planted some grass for a simple and scenic area that’s a lot easier to maintain (see a full exterior breakdown here). We lightened things up and added a welcoming cheerful vibe by painting the floor (in subtle tan and cream stripes) and creating a functional seating area (we even added a little dog corner for Burger).

I am NOT a makeup pro (I’m pretty much the polar opposite), but I thought it might be funny to make a two minute video of me putting on my makeup because it’s so fast and easy, and a few people have seen pics like this and said “what did you use on your cheeks?! Tell me if you’d find that helpful and maybe I’ll work up the courage to aim a camera at my face for two minutes and press record. A few members of our household are sensitive to overly perfumed or fragranced stuff, so there’s no Febreze or Glade Plug-Ins in rotation. We generally rely on soy candles with various essential oils for a really nice non-irritating scent (like this one, which also keeps mosquitos away when we light it outside). This Mrs. Meyer’s candle is also one of my favorites (I take the cap and label off so it just looks clean and simple on a counter or shelf). It smells JUST LIKE the multi-purpose cleaner I use in the lemon verbena scent, so my little mom hack is that I like to light one in the kitchen so it smells freshly cleaned (but I didn’t actually scrub anything down – ha!).

It’s crazy well rated too (over 16,000 five star reviews!!!). Plants are in this mix too, because they’re awesome for purifying the air (see this NASA-approved list for the most efficient ones) and they look pretty too, so I’m down with having something green in every room. The Eco Me spray air freshener is basically a greener version of Febreze (I love the mint smell best) so that’s nice if something is musty or a room/rug/sofa just smells stale. Generally speaking, the MVP here is our Seventh Generation Free & Clear detergent, which we use for every load of laundry (this is also a concentrated cleaner so it doesn’t take up much space on the shelf). We haven’t used fabric softener or any sort of spray starch for YEARS and don’t miss it.

Then we added a large iron outdoor lantern, built a pergola (cargola?), and bought in some potted plants for more interest and architecture. Ashley Judd and Aloe Blacc, who’ve both been touched by the suicide of a loved one, visited the White House on Tuesday (April 23) to help the White House unveil its new national strategy to prevent suicide. Both artists talked about losing loved ones to suicide in the event hosted by Doug Emhoff, husband of VP Kamala Harris. As a rare bipartisan choice, it was something to dine out on. We also widened the doorway that leads to the sunroom and the kitchen for a more open vibe, and created a functional little “mudroom” in one corner and a cozy little office nook in another. Oh and as for what lip balm – always Burt’s Bees!

We use Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Multi-Surface Concentrate Cleaner for nearly everything else (no buying toilet cleaners and tile cleaners and wood floor cleaners each to do an individual job). We like the concentrated formula so it lasts a while and we can just water it down, which I usually do by around 50%. We typically use a moist microfiber cloth to rub down whatever it is that needs scrubbing (floors, counters, tabletops, windowsills, etc).

Then in the morning as a toner/skin cleanser I wipe my face down with a light swipe of watered down Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (remember it has to be Bragg’s with “the mother” in it). Water it down about halfway – so it’s 50% water and 50% ACV (I premix about 2 weeks worth and store mine in a small lidded tupperware container that you’d use to transport salad dressing). I just dip a cotton ball in that little tupperware jar every morning and wipe it all over my face as I’m pouring my tea.

And the back room that was once the dining room became our home office thanks to the addition of a big built-in desk. And here it is after we painted the walls a nice sandy tone, went glossy white with the trim (and even added crown molding) to create a space that could easily sleep two people. Making our own art and upholstering the headboard ourselves saved us some serious dough. Alas, we couldn’t salvage the cracked and stained vintage tile hiding under that nasty carpet and climbing the walls, so we gutted the entire room and brought in marble floor tile, soft taupey-green walls, and white subway shower tile for a total makeover. We also raised the shower curtain, removed the linen closet door, turned a night table into a vanity, and DIYed our own vintage-inspired art. So as I mentioned above, at night it’s just a light coating of Dr. Bronner’s Organic Coconut Oil (I swear by that brand because it’s so organic/pure) that I rub into my face just like you’d apply any moisturizer.

Our first house evolved over four and a half years of blood, sweat, tears, and sledgehammering. And we’ve got plenty of photos to show how much it changed (hence the roundup of before and after pictures below). We also made an interior and exterior floor plan, along with a video house tour that we filmed right before we moved. And if you’re looking for other general favorites of mine (like fav shoes, slippers, clothes, household stuff, etc – this page has you covered). I don’t buy toner or makeup remover or eye cream or face lotion or any other potions for wrinkles or acne or stuff like that. And I’m not a doctor or a dermatologist so this is just what works for me (my derm knows what I do and her response was “your skin looks happy” so I’ll take it – ha!).

Fitness-minded cruisers have a bounty of options these days, as cruise lines continue to get more innovative with their health and wellness offerings. Even those who aren't overly active can find more subdued ways to loosen up their muscles.

Highlights of this option include a 5K or 10K run/walk in Maui, or the chance to run the prized Ironman course in in Kona. There's also exclusive beach parties and an early morning workout on the top deck of the ship, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. Just taking a visual tour of our unique ship gets your adrenaline pumping, imagine what it’s actually like once you come onboard. The healthy, active life you lead on land can come along with you on your next vacation on “the healthiest ship at sea”. Revitalize in the Lotus Spa, named Best Spa on a Cruise Ship by Spa finder Wellness 365TM. As part of our relaxing cruise activities, you can choose from a variety of treatments, such as aroma stone therapy massages and detoxifying ocean wraps.

This Fitness-focused Cruise Ship Will Have a Whole Deck Just for Sports and Exercise

Passenger liners have state-of-the-art fitness facilities and onboard gymnasiums often rival successfully the land-based gyms - adding the extra of ocean views. Just about every cruise line offers the opportunity to embark on more active shore excursions (think ziplining, cave tubing and hiking), depending on the port, but only a few truly cater to fitness-minded cruisers. We love Lindblad Expeditions for its wide array of itineraries that offer ample opportunities for more active excursions -- typical of expedition cruises.

Fitness activities and onboard exercises on weight loss-themed voyages help (and can upgrade) personal weight loss programs. Shipboard exercises include aerobics, yoga, tai-chi, jogging, deck walks, special exercise programs, water aerobics, special spa treatments, pedometer tour walks (ashore).

For those who prefer running in warmer climates, fitness tour operator Marathon Expeditions is hosting the Hawaii Running Cruise in the winter.

Perhaps even more than the variety of equipment, though, we love the gym's thoughtful layout, which includes a vast amount of open space. It feels far from cluttered and allows for plenty of room to do stretches and body weight movements like lunges, pushups and burpees. The gym also has an aerobics studio that hosts classes such as yoga, spinning and Thai boxing.

The 350-passenger luxury ship will still maintain a casual vibe — guests can feel comfortable in street clothes, exercise gear, or even a bathrobe. And instead of Gelato pop-ups and soda stations, you’ll find sports, exercise classes, and wellness areas filled with the latest fitness technology. Most cruise shipping companies now provide more onboard activities and healthier menus - thanks to highly-trained chefs, food is delicious and you can actually lose weight. Industry's largest companies - Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL)- attract customers with most-innovative ships, but also with shipboard dining changes to meet the market's demands. Both corporations introduced low-cal and low-fat (still delicious) diet menus, more active excursions, free workouts.

Cunard receives top marks in this category for its devotion to ballroom dancing. Professionals teach waltz, tango, samba and other dances during the day, and cruisers can practice their newly learned moves at Royal Nights themed formal balls held in the evenings. Gentlemen hosts are present on every cruise to make sure single ladies don't turn into wallflowers. If you like retro chic fitness options like ballroom dancing, look for Queen Elizabeth's 1930s-inspired Games Deck, complete with bowls and croquet plus fencing classes on all three Cunard ships. The inaugural sailing will be a seven-day Mediterranean itinerary, stopping in Portugal, France, Corsica, Greece, Spain, Croatia, and Italy. Being a small ship, the new Blue World Voyages vessel will be able to access those secluded areas — coral reefs, hidden waterfalls — that larger, amusement-park-style ships can’t access. Perhaps the most enriching way to center yourself is through experiencing the beauty and presence of some of the world’s most incredible destinations.

US Air Force Opens Competition to Develop Low-Cost Cruise Missiles

These "round-robin" missions marked the beginning of the operation's Air Force component and were the longest known aircraft combat sorties in history at the time (more than 14,000 miles (23,000 km) and 35 hours of flight). It entered operational use on the B-52H in August 1981 and became its primary weapon in December 1982. The air-launched cruise missile had become operational four years earlier, in December 1982. More than 100 launches have taken place since then, with a 90% approximate success rate. Cruise missiles can be a valuable tool for militaries, providing precision strikes with minimal collateral damage. However, the cost of acquiring and launching cruise missiles can be significant, ranging from a few hundred thousand dollars for smaller models to over $10 million for larger, more advanced models.

Cost Analysis of Cruise Missiles: A Look at the Price Tag

To defend shipping in the Red Sea, U.S. naval assets must defend larger areas, rather than a specific point target. This requires interceptors with longer ranges to increase the area of protection of any individual ship. Shorter-range interceptors are cheaper, but also can only provide defenses to a smaller area around the ship. These cheaper interceptors are useful for defending the ship itself from attacks but cannot provide the area-wide coverage to also defend shipping vessels. The U.S. Air Force’s new nuclear cruise missile will cost at least $29 billion to develop, procure, operate and sustain, a Pentagon evaluation found.

As such, the program was renamed Subsonic Cruise Armed Decoy, retaining the SCAD acronym. The ALCM so improved the capabilities of the US bomber force that the Soviets developed new technologies to counter the weapon. Among these were airborne early warning aircraft and new weapons like the MiG-31 and Tor missile system specifically to shoot down the AGM-86.[3] The Air Force responded with the development of the AGM-129 ACM, which included stealth capabilities. The ending of the Cold War led to cutbacks in this program, and its expensive maintenance eventually resulted in it being abandoned in favor of life extensions to the original ALCM.

Bomber-launched variants of the V-1 saw limited operational service near the end of the war, with the pioneering V-1's design reverse-engineered by the Americans as the Republic-Ford JB-2 cruise missile. While ballistic missiles were the preferred weapons for land targets, heavy nuclear and conventional weapon tipped cruise missiles were seen by the USSR as a primary weapon to destroy United States naval carrier battle groups. Congress will be instrumental in the Department of Defense finding the sweet spot among requirements, costs, and operations. Analysis has been done to show that the SLCM-N’s contribution to nuclear deterrence can be made at these shorter ranges. The constraints of ship-based air defense also introduce unique challenges that may require the use of a more expensive interceptor. The need to intercept more capable threats like anti-ship cruise missiles or ballistic missiles (both of which have been fired by the Houthis) means more expensive interceptors must be part of the deployed inventory.

Accordingly, in June 1973, SCAD was canceled in favor of a system dedicated purely to the long-range attack mission. The original designation number remained, but the name changed to reflect the new mission, becoming the Air Launched Cruise Missile, or ALCM. The Congressional Budget Office estimated in December 2020 that the Pentagon would save $12.5 billion from FY21 to FY30 by canceling the LRSO program and the W80-4 warhead it will carry. The Air Force could buy more than 1,000 LRSO missiles, which are projected to have a range in excess of 1,500 miles.

The United States Army has also tested launching Tomahawks from ground-based platforms. The USS Missouri, a World War II-era battleship and the very last of its kind, was fitted to fire Tomahawks during the opening salvos of the First Gulf War. The United States Air Force's first operational surface-to-surface missile was the winged, mobile, nuclear-capable MGM-1 Matador, also similar in concept to the V-1. Deployment overseas began in 1954, first to West Germany and later to the Republic of China and South Korea.

The United States deployed these missiles on SSNs during the Cold War, but they were removed from service (along with most US tactical nuclear weapons) and eventually retired by 2010. The JCTD office provided project oversight, and Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RW) provided technical management and overall technology integration. Flight tests and operational demonstrations were flown in 2018 and 2019 at the Yuma Test Proving Grounds, Arizona.

Gray Wolf Missile Design

Compared to the models that entered service in the 1980s, the A-model had a distinctive look; the nose tapered sharply to a triangular point giving it a shark-like appearance, compared to the later models which had a more rounded conventional appearance. Finally, senior US military leadership must stay focused on this project—and on achieving it in parallel with other projects. Nuclear modernization is a priority for the Department of Defense—there is no doubt about that. But the addition of another nuclear acquisition program will further strain management, funding, and attention. Ensuring no harm is done to schedules for the ongoing nuclear modernization programs must be a priority.

The air-launched version of the Harpoon was first deployed on the Navy's P-3C Orion in 1979. The desired range and price requirements are accompanied by NAVAIR’s ask for industry respondents who can produce “a minimum of 500” MACE missiles per year. This is likely well short of the quantities an effective long range air-launched cruise would generate in terms of demand. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the most recent cruise missile developed was the Kalibr missile which entered production in the early 1990s and was officially inducted into the Russian arsenal in 1994. However, it only saw its combat debut on 7 October 2015, in Syria as a part of the Russian military campaign in Syria.

It's powered by both a rocket booster and turbofan jet engine made by Williams International. According to PBS, the rocket booster engine launches the Tomahawk in the air (hence all the smoke you may see in news broadcasts or photos you see of the missile) and then its jet engine takes the missile the rest of the way to its target. In 2017, Raytheon’s Tomahawk program manager told reporters at an event at the missile plant in Tucson, Ariz., that the navigation system upgrades will ensure the missile can strike targets even if GPS is taken down. The Navy’s ask that MACE be able to carry a variety of interchangeable payloads and seekers points to multiple applications as well.

The challenge extends beyond weapons capacity to ensure affordable, mass delivery, scalability, and accessibility to partner nations and allies. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) presents a formidable challenge with its extensive arsenal of cruise and ballistic missiles. A barrage of low-cost cruise missiles could prove instrumental in overwhelming the Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) of the PLA, bolstering offensive capabilities against the PLA Air Force and Navy. For this role, the accuracy of the original INS guidance hardware was not enough. While a similar system was also used in SRAM, its shorter range and much shorter flight times meant the drift rate of the system was not a serious concern as long as the bomber could feed it accurate information just before launch, to "zero out" the drift. To provide the accuracy needed to attack the SAM sites with a small warhead, some system was needed to zero out the drift in-flight, and for this need, a radar-based TERCOM system was added.

In 1944, during World War II, Germany deployed the first operational cruise missiles. The V-1, often called a flying bomb, contained a gyroscope guidance system and was propelled by a simple pulsejet engine, the sound of which gave it the nickname of "buzz bomb" or "doodlebug". Accuracy was sufficient only for use against very large targets (the general area of a city), while the range of 250 km was significantly lower than that of a bomber carrying the same payload. The main advantages were speed (although not sufficient to outperform contemporary propeller-driven interceptors) and expendability. The production cost of a V-1 was only a small fraction of that of a V-2 supersonic ballistic missile with a similar-sized warhead.[6] Unlike the V-2, the initial deployments of the V-1 required stationary launch ramps which were susceptible to bombardment.
